Another Girl Another Planet

Celebrating the unique fashion sensibility of fearless young women and the spirit of girl power. A generation of girls grew up with Valerie Phillips’s work pinned on their bedroom walls. The self-confessed Peter Pan is famous for capturing the essence of female youth—girls who boldly unravel their individual quirks before the camera, with loads of spark and beautifully unpredictable things going on in their heads.

In this personally curated volume, Phillips has selected her best work from her limited-edition, self-published books, as well as images from editorials, advertising, and music albums, featuring It Girls such as Sienna Miller, Daisy Lowe, and Florence Welch. Another Girl Another Planet gives a personal and instinctive view of the girl experience, with honest portraits of young women captured uninhibited in their unique universes. These images celebrate the exploration of personal style, the female spirit, the beauty found in idiosyncracy, and the fierceness that comes from the weird, crazy, cool day-to-day of being a girl.

This empowering volume is sure to inspire the spirit of dreamy, moody, and unfiltered sense of girl power within readers. It will be a treasured collector's item and serve as indispensable and inspirational style guide for young women.

Reviews

"While Valerie's previous books have explored the nuances and complexities of girlhood in relation to a single subject, Another Girl Another Planet is simply a feel-good compilation of all her most treasured photos."
i-D Magazine

"The photographer Valerie Phillips's new book, Another Girl Another Planet, is nothing but women — from Sienna Miller and PJ Harvey to that girl on the corner — to swoon over."
W Magazine

"Photographer Valerie Phillips–who has shot for the likes of i-D, Nylon, and many others– is known for her bold, edgy portraits of modern young women. The book will include images from these smaller books as well as her work in advertising, editorial, and album covers. For insight into a fully-developed photography niche, take a look at her work."
—Join The Breed

"There is consistency in Phillips' images: people who know her work, will easily recognise one of her pictures whether they see it on a billboard advertising sportswear or in a fashion magazine.
Phillips' photographs usually feature unusual muses - models, musicians, actors, family and friends - all sharing one main thing in common, a sense of freedom and rebellion."

"In her new book, "Another Girl Another Planet," photographer Valerie Phillips looks over the last 15 years she spent photographing everyone from Instagram-famous stars to girls she met on airplanes and cafes."
VICE

"It can be argued that this all pertains to Phillips style, employing a candid authenticity. . . . Distinct fashion sensibilities are celebrated, but so are emotions, acts and archetypes. As far as visual studies of a photographer's work (thus far) go, this declares Phillips as an artist with an eye for boldness and a voice that seeks to elevate her subjects."
—CoolHunting.com

"A visceral celebration of girls being girls and all things girly. Unapologetic, edgy, happy."
—Citizens of Humanity Magazine

"Besides the saturated color palette and spontaneous settings Phillips brings to her fashion-culture portraits of young women, there’s a flexible comfort zone: Her subjects dance and pout and pop bubblegum and ham it up with abandon."
