Native Voices: The Living Language of Indigenous Art

An extraordinary collaboration among Native American scholars and curators, presenting masterworks of pottery, basketry, and intricate beadwork from tribes across the United States and Canada.

This volume brings together an unparalleled selection of rare and exceptional objects, many over a century old, representing hundreds of Indigenous nations across North America. Ranging from exquisitely woven baskets and finely crafted ceramics to intricate beadwork and ceremonial objects, these works reveal artistic traditions of remarkable sophistication, innovation, and enduring cultural significance. Thoughtfully assembled and deeply collaborative, the book pairs these works with newly commissioned essays, stories, and poems by leading Indigenous voices, revealing the living histories, cultural knowledge, and artistic brilliance embodied in each piece.

Organized thematically, the catalogue explores basketry, pottery, dolls and cradleboards, textiles, and moccasins—showcasing remarkable examples of artistry and craftsmanship, many published here for the first time. Alongside these treasures, contributions ranging from interpretive fiction and poetry to a recipe offer fresh and deeply personal perspectives. The book includes a booklet that illustrates the Diné weaving tradition. Filling a longstanding gap in publishing, the volume offers a rich introduction to Native American art, presenting hundreds of never-before-published works through the voices of scholars, artists, and storytellers.
