Home by the Sea: The Architecture and Interiors of Khoury Vogt

A profile of one of the country’s most inviting and influential newly built communities, renowned for its serene architecture and attention to craftsmanship.

Design is about more than the elements in a room; it’s also about the negative spaces that allow the pieces to communicate and interact with one another, creating a full and vibrant composition.

For fifteen years, the award-winning firm Khoury Vogt Architects has focused on building in the town of Alys Beach, Florida—one of the most coveted pieces of coastline along the Gulf—creating a neighborhood of individual residences where no two are alike but each accommodates gracious warm-weather living and projects serenity thanks to a shared vocabulary based on classical composition with Mediterranean and tropical detailing.

Based on the principles of New Urbanism, this master-planned community is designed to provide residents with private homes designed for true rest and relaxation. Khoury Vogt are the stewards of this original vision and have helped the city flourish by incorporating façades and walls of cooling white plaster; archways, windows, doors, and reading nooks that incorporate fluted shapes and columns from Marianne's Lebanese-and-French heritage, rendered modern; and sculptural shutters, pergolas, and awnings that could have been plucked directly from the Caribbean. They have designed every railing, every sculptural step, every rooftop veranda. The entire town reflects the dazzling light bouncing off the adjacent white-sand beaches, helping the brilliant sun to diffuse through every room of every interior.
