Eat Like a Farmer: The Guide to Sourcing and Cooking Real Food

Eat locally. Eat simply. Eat seasonally. Eat healthily. Eat Like a Farmer!

The search for healthy, local produce can be a challenge. And once you have all that local Swiss chard in hand, what should you do with it? Author and regenerative farmer Megan Neubauer walks you through sourcing her favorite varieties of vegetables, fruits, meats, and pantry staples wherever you are, and then transforming your finds into a delicious farm-to-table meal.

Eat Like a Farmer offers over 110 seasonal recipes that are simple enough for busy weeknights with kids yet decadent enough for the most special of gatherings, including:

  • Golden Beets with Caramelized Onions, Pine Nuts, and Feta and Strawberry and Tarragon Biscuit Shortcakes in spring
  • Eggplant and Potato Curry, Pork Chops with Stewed Peaches and Tomatoes, and Blackberry Pavlova in summer
  • Short Rib Chili, Maple and Coriander Carrots, and Pumpkin Rye Chocolate Chip Cookies in fall
  • Beet and Dark Chocolate Brownies with Ginger in winter
There’s a recipe here for every season and every palate. Throughout, Megan reminds us that getting to know your local farmer can turn a weekly task into a moment of connection and excitement about what each season has in store. By supporting the farmers who are restoring our soil and caring for our planet through organic and regenerative practices, you’ll also see that making truly delectable, nutrient-dense dishes begins well before you plate your dish. It is the healthy soil, proper land stewardship, and humane, pasture-based practices that make all the difference.

Eat Like a Farmer is about connecting with your food, from the places and people you buy it from to the moment it arrives on your table as a delicious, healthy meal.

About The Author

Megan Neubauer is a regenerative farmer, author, and champion of local food. After a career in scientific research, she and her father built Pure Land Farm into one of Texas’s most beloved pick-your-own destinations, drawing tens of thousands of visitors out of the grocery store and into the field to harvest their own fruits and vegetables. She shared Pure Land’s story in her first book, Pick-Your-Own Farming: Free Yourself from Farmers Markets and Join the Agritourism Revolution, a practical guide to their successful business model.
For Megan, the last fifteen years of farming have never been just about growing food; it’s about growing relationships between people and the natural world. Still an avid farmers’ market shopper, she loves befriending fellow local growers and savoring produce at the height of its season. Through her half-Caribbean heritage and a childhood spent in Southeast Asia and the Middle East, Megan developed a broad palate and appetite for new flavors that inspires her to try everything she finds, a passion she loves sharing with her husband, Allan, and daughter, Quinn.
