Otter

From the co-author and illustrator of The Lost Spells, and The Lost Words—single animal focused meditations in accordion form.

An accordion book doesn’t open, it unfolds. One side is filled with beautiful watercolour images of an animal: sometimes in motion, sometimes at rest. The other is filled with text—poems, descriptions, invocations—inspired by the same animal.

Together they work as spells to summon the animal’s spirit. Jackie Morris has painted them using antique watercolours, some from boxes which hadn't been opened for over 150 years, woken from their slumber with a single drop of water.

About The Author

Jackie Morris is an internationally acclaimed British author and illustrator of more than seventy works whose richly detailed watercolors and lyrical storytelling have made her one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary illustrated books. Jackie lives on the Pembrokeshire Coast in Wales, where the wild landscapes and the flora and fauna that inspire her writing and illustration form the core of her artistic practice. Her art is celebrated for its atmospheric watercolors that bring the natural world and mythic and folkloric narratives to life for readers. Among the works for which she is best known, The Lost Words, with co-author Robert Mcfarlane, was selected by UK booksellers as the “Most Beautiful Book” at the Books Are My Bag Awards in 2016. Her titles The Lost Words and its companion The Lost Spells have been translated into multiple languages and inspired touring exhibitions and multimedia projects.
