Pang Jiun, a master of Eastern Expressionism, uniquely fuses traditional Chinese aesthetics with Western oil painting techniques, and draws inspiration from literati painting, calligraphy, Impressionism, Fauvism, and even classical music. Born into an artistic family in Shanghai in 1936, his father, Pang Xunqin, studied oil painting in France and upon returning to China, co-founded the modern art group Storm Society along with Ni Yide. Now approaching his nineties, Pang Jiun continues diligently to create art. His graceful and transcendental brushwork at times resembles an exuberant dance, at others, an elegant and lyrical lament. Through his keen and delicate sense of color and vivid, precise lines, he captures moments of enlightenment in life, expressing his boundless passion for existence.

Featuring new essays by scholars from the East and the West, the book traces Master Pang’s life from his birth to his international acclaim, and his time teaching in Taiwan. Beacon in the Storm explores his influences and details his stylistic evolution, all of which underpin the philosophical mission to create distinctly Chinese oil paintings. In so doing, this volume highlights Pang’s significance as a bridge between Eastern harmony and Western expressionism. Wu Mo leads research, curatorial activities, and programs as the Sigg Curator at M+, Hong Kong. She has co-curated numerous exhibitions, and her writings have been widely published in academic journals, periodicals, catalogues, and various art publications. Wu Mo holds a PhD in History of Chinese Art from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and was shortlisted for the International Awards for Art Criticism (IAAC) in 2014 and the Chinese Contemporary Art Award (CCAA) in 2015.

Rémy Jarry is a French art historian, curator, and writer based in Asia. He spent his formative years in Hong Kong and mainland China before earning his PhD in Art History and Theory from the China Academy of Art. His work spans art criticism, research, and curatorial practice, with a focus on transcultural dialogues in visual art. He teaches at Chulalongkorn University and the Catholic University of Paris, and is a curator of the fifth edition of the Bangkok Art Biennale.

Rita Wong is the chairperson of the Li Ching Foundation, a nonprofit charitable organization founded in Taiwan in 1983. Since 2005, the Foundation has led the field in developing online archives and compiling catalogues raisonnés for modern Chinese artists. Under her leadership, the Foundation has become a leading research center, serving collectors, scholars, and students through research and consultation.

William Fong is an award-winning curator with over a decade of experience shaping landmark art exhibitions across Asia. His practice bridges classical Chinese literature, contemporary art, and modern masters, with a particular commitment to presenting artists whose work illuminates the dialogue between heritage and contemporary expression.
